When we got a call from Property Brothers about building a garage for Lisa and Chris, we were thrilled to hear their story and get the invitation!

We enjoyed working with the team to pick out just the right garage to compliment the home and provide the extra space it needed.

Special delivery! Last night on #BuyingAndSelling, @mrsilverscott put the fab in prefab!

They chose a 12×24 Classic Garage, big enough to park a pickup truck in, store lawn equipment, or even use as a workshop.  This additional space added value to the home for potential buyers as it provides and extra 288 square feet of space.

You could see during the episode that the crew used it to store materials for the home renovations.  It never hurts to have some additional space!

We loved getting to meet Jonathan on set, he took the time to take pictures with everyone on our team. It was such a fun day of filming!

Texas Family Converts Shed to Tiny House

A couple of months ago, we were contacted by Beau and Kelly Brotherton with Better Together Life about their desire to purchase a Woodtex shed and convert it to a tiny house.

The Brothertons had decided to sell their current home in search of a more simple life of homesteading and financial freedom. They were trying to find the best shed to fit their needs that they could convert into their new home. Beau met with Travis, one of our retail partners in Texas, to discuss options and together they decided that the Lincoln in a 16×48 would be the best choice!

Here is a behind the scenes of Woodtex building the shed that the Brothertons will convert into their tiny home:

And check out this video where they tour their unfinished home:

Exciting times for sure! We can’t wait to follow along as they complete their home and live the homesteading life.

It’s not uncommon to hear stories of memories being made, skills being learned, or even businesses being built in a garage – one can learn many life lessons in the garage. In his first Woodtex blog post, our Director of Marketing, Patrick Miller, brings us the experiences and life lessons learned while spending countless hours in the garage with his dad and brother.

As a kid, the garage was the second most important ‘room’ in the house. Other than the kitchen, no other space holds as many memories for me as the garage.

I was a ‘car guy’ as young as 3 or 4 years old, and when I went to kindergarten I could identify most every car that drove by our house on the busy state highway. Knowing the difference between a Pontiac Firebird and a Chevy Camaro was a cool thing for a five-year-old.

My dad nurtured that love by making sure we always had a great garage wherever we lived. When Dad showed up with a brand new 1981 Honda Civic–our first new car, similar to the one above–I remember he would carefully park it in the garage and warn us sternly about not letting our bicycles bang against the shiny new paint.

On Saturdays, we spent a lot of time in the garage. Dad was fastidious about his cars, and my brothers and I begged to help him wash the car on Saturday afternoons.

He would always wash the car in the garage. I had no idea until I was older that most people wash their cars in the driveway. He didn’t want the sun to dry the car too quickly, lest it would leave water spots on the paint. Even in winter, he’d fire up the old wood stove in the corner, getting it nice and cozy in there, and we’d shed our coats and get underfoot as he gave the car it’s weekly bath.

I remember distinctly when I was allowed to help with this routine. My introduction to washing the car was being allowed to start with the wheels and tires. He was concerned about having dirt in the water that might scratch the paint, so I was to wait to wash the tires and wheels until he had washed the rest of the car.

On the surface, these memories seem pedestrian–almost mundane. But that’s where life happens–In the mundane threads that weave our lives together into the fabricthat is life and family. The conversations that happen when father and son are tackling a project. The values that are imparted. The lessons learned.

It’s not a stretch to say that many Saturdays were spent almost entirely in the garage. It was our domain, where we could be dirty and greasy, and grow up from boys to men. But there was one exception to our total dominion over the garage: Mom.

Mom had one rule about the garage: When we’re done working, and washing the car, we had to get the garage floor cleaned up. Her clean house was not going to stay clean if the whole family tracked through a dirty garage to get to the house! So after the day’s work was done, we’d pull the car out, and work with a hose and a squeegee, and clean up the garage floor until it met her satisfaction.

As my brothers and I got older, the size and scope of our garage projects grew as well. The fastidiousness of my parents and my love for cars melded with our entrepreneurial tendencies, and I started a business with my brother right in our garage. I was 13, and he was 11, and we started detailing vehicles for friends and family. We’d start early on Saturday morning, and toil for many hours to get those cars as close to new looking as possible. We made some money too-I think we started out charging around $75, and soon raised our prices above $100 per car. That’s real money to a couple of adolescents!

Many Saturdays, we would be squeegeeing the floor after a long day of car detailing and the clock would turn past midnight. Sunday morning. We knew then that we’d better scoot. There was a strict prohibition against working on Sunday, and it was now Sunday morning. Time to put the stuff away, park the customer’s car proudly in the driveway, and carefully pull Dad’s car back into the garage.

Father teaches his son how to put oil in the family car.

Now that I have my own sons I realize again how important it is to have spaces like the garage. Space for boys to be boys, and men to be men. Where you can turn wrenches on cars, lawnmowers and bicycles. Or where you can just push the door up, set up some lawn chairs, and sit there and watch a warm summer rain while enjoying some of Mom’s chocolate chip cookies.

It’s deeply rewarding and humbling to be a part of creating spaces like this. Spaces where memories are made, treasures are stored, and lives are knit together. I’m incredibly proud to be a part of the Woodtex family, and I invite you to create your own ‘stories from the garage’!

We talk a lot about growth here at Woodtex, and we’re excited that as we serve more customers around the country, we’re able to equip our teams with outstanding leadership. One of the newest members of our leadership team is Patrick Miller, who jumped head first into the Director of Marketing role in March, 2016.

Patrick was initially attracted to Woodtex because of our culture, a core value we work hard to foster and maintain. He is looking forward to working with “really smart, hard working people that are crazy enough to think they can change the world in some way” and he’s excited to help grow Woodtex so we can impact even more people, and build meaningful relationships as we go.

As Bill Hampton, Woodtex President explains, “Patrick has proven marketing success, is the kind of self-starter we like on the team and is already making an impact.” We’re excited to have Patrick lead all areas of our marketing efforts, identifying opportunities for growth and developing strategies to ensure that we expand and grow the Woodtex brand across the country.

Patrick and his wife, Mary June, along with their 4 children will move from Lancaster, PA to the Nashville area soon.

Our New York Cabin Team has set the bar high when it comes to home show exhibits. According to Rick Herman of the Rochester Home Builders’ Association, Woodtex is the first builder ever to build a real home at the Rochester Home and Garden Show. This little house is generating a lot of buzz!

If you’re in the Rochester, NY area this weekend, you have a unique opportunity to tour one of the smallest cabin models that we have available. This one is a 13’6” x 26′ Cayuga Cabin, and at just 578 square feet, this home could fit in your backyard. But don’t let the size fool you–this is a fully functional, 2-story home with Modular Home Certification!

In total, this house has 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom, a kitchen, and a living area with a vaulted ceiling. With flat dormers on both sides, the second-floor loft is roomy and comfortable.

On the exterior, the LP® SmartSide® lap siding is stained with a rich Chestnut Brown Urethane with painted trim. Rounding out the charming look with black shutters, black shingles, and a red door, it’s hard to decide whether to call it a cabin or a house! You may have to stop by this weekend and decide for yourself!

The Rochester Home & Garden show is this weekend, March 19th and 20th at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center. Stop by for ideas on updating inside and outside your home, inspiration for building a new home, plus wine tastings, and arts and crafts exhibits from local artisans. But don’t forget to stop by and say hello to the Woodtex Team and take a tour of our Cayuga-cabin-turned-small-house!

If you’re not in the Rochester area, you can catch a walkthrough from Rochester’s YNN News and WHEC.

In 2015, Woodtex made a commitment to help support KORE Foundation, an organization that aims to eliminate poverty in Haiti through creating sustainable solutions, focusing on the steps “beyond relief” for the greatest impact. We 100% believe in their mission and goals, and we made it our goal to fund 8 Chicken Coops – which is $16,000.

We did this by contributing funds donated at our Open House Events across the country, plus we donated $25 per sale on all products at Open House and $25 per sale of every single Chicken Coop sold for the entire year. In addition, for every Chicken Coop sold in 2015, Woodtex owners Kent Lapp and Ben Lapp donated a matching $25 donation!

In addition to fundraising, we sent 6 of our team members to Haiti last February to help physically build Chicken Coops and get to know the communities and some of the families that KORE Foundation serves. We had an amazing time, took some awesome photos, and had a blast serving in Haiti.

When all was said and done, we exceeded our goal and raised $19,294. This funded our goal of 8 Chicken Coops, plus 1 more addition coop and then some! We are proud to help change the lives of struggling families in Haiti.

If you have noticed some changes to our website over the last couple of weeks, you’re not alone! A couple of weeks ago, we launched a brand new website – literally brand new.

NEW WOODTEX LOGO

The most noticeable thing you may see on the new woodtex.com is our new logo. The design and colors are a major update, but overall it’s a simpler, cleaner design.

Simplicity also led to our transition from “Woodtex” to “Woodtex”. One word, one capital letter, and no dash. Just Woodtex!

EASY TO FIND INVENTORY

Our manufacturing facilities continually work to build stock structures at our Sales Centers. That way, you can visit the Woodtex Sales Center near you and explore all of our buildings in person. Because we have locations all over the U.S., and so many different product types and styles, keep track of inventory can sometimes be difficult! We wanted to make it as easy as possible for you to see what we have available in stock, so we created a few cool new functions to the inventory section of the new woodtex.com.

The clickable map on the Where To Buy page makes it easy to find inventory and Sales locations in your region. Also on the Where To Buy page, you’ll be able to find inventory and Sales Centers by searching for your zip code.

With so many structures, we are diligent about keeping everything organized! When viewing in stock inventory, all structures can be filtered by style and type.

As always, you can view in stock product photos, details, location, and prices right here on our website.

On our product pages, we’ve added bigger (and better) photos, plus photos of available options and upgrades for each structure.

Woodtex Storage Shed

We are continuously working on ways to improve our customer experience on the website, including a way to visualize what size structure you’ll need. Check this out:

We are still in the midst of this big transition to a new website, and we look forward to hearing your feedback! Let us know what you love and what’s not working for you.
