When we got a call from Property Brothers about building a garage for Lisa and Chris, we were thrilled to hear their story and get the invitation!

We enjoyed working with the team to pick out just the right garage to compliment the home and provide the extra space it needed.

They chose a 12×24 Classic Garage, big enough to park a pickup truck in, store lawn equipment, or even use as a workshop.  This additional space added value to the home for potential buyers as it provides and extra 288 square feet of space.

You could see during the episode that the crew used it to store materials for the home renovations.  It never hurts to have some additional space!

We loved getting to meet Jonathan on set, he took the time to take pictures with everyone on our team. It was such a fun day of filming!

Our “Haven” She Shed

We purchased our Woodtex shed right after we moved into our farmhouse. Its purpose was never to be a shed but to be another extension of our home. Our Tiny House was constructed to serve as a pool house and an extra sleeping quarters.

We looked at many Woodtex sheds but fell in love with the Haven for its space and lofted areas that we now use for guest sleeping. We had the shed ordered with a few special instructions for the lofts and for the windows to be double insulated. It was delivered within a few weeks and came exactly as we imagined.

For our space, I knew I needed a sink, kitchenette, a small living area, a bathroom, and a sleeping quarters. We managed to fit that all into a 200 square foot space. We contracted out these ideas and started first by having it plumbed in and ran for electricity. We installed a ductless unit too which keeps the shed heated and cooled. Then came the walls. We went with vertical board and batten sheets and then had the interior all sprayed Alabaster White, by Sherwin Williams. To our surprise, we had just enough boxes of leftover flooring from our home build to finish out the floors in this space.

With a little decor ingenuity, I made this space my vintage Haven. We enjoy it for many reasons, but I find that its such a sweet surprise for people who come over. They love taking a step back in time to enjoy this she shed. It really is a great getaway and my most favorite “room” in our home.

Texas Family Converts Shed to Tiny House

A couple of months ago, we were contacted by Beau and Kelly Brotherton with Better Together Life about their desire to purchase a Woodtex shed and convert it to a tiny house.

The Brothertons had decided to sell their current home in search of a more simple life of homesteading and financial freedom. They were trying to find the best shed to fit their needs that they could convert into their new home. Beau met with Travis, one of our retail partners in Texas, to discuss options and together they decided that the Lincoln in a 16×48 would be the best choice!

Here is a behind the scenes of Woodtex building the shed that the Brothertons will convert into their tiny home:

And check out this video where they tour their unfinished home:

Exciting times for sure! We can’t wait to follow along as they complete their home and live the homesteading life.

It can be overwhelming to know how to get started when it comes to organizing your home. Here are 5 ideas to help you get started…

Are you tired of the dinnertime circus, where you are shoving things aside in your pantry just to find the basil so you can make a decent meal for your family? Or maybe you spend your morning looking for your missing earring and trying to find something to wear.

organizing your home

Do visits from friends and family cause your cheeks to flush with embarrassment as soon as you open the door?

If clutter is overtaking your home and your life, and you don’t know where to start, here are 5 ideas to help you organize your home and make room for the things in life that really matter:

organizing your home

1. GET INSPIRED

Before you get to work organizing, make a Pinterest board of spaces that inspire you and ideas for organization that you find helpful.  Anytime you are feeling discouraged in your organization journey, you can refer back to this board to help you stay motivated and get back on track. Check out our organization pinterest board right here.

2. CREATE A COMMAND CENTER

Create a space for your family calendar and other important items – this could be in your kitchen, entryway or another spot in your home. Here’s what you need for a great command center:

  • Find a space in your home that will work.  It doesn’t matter where, just make it work in the space you have.
  • Gather. Corral all of your family papers, keys, announcements, bills and more.
  • Create a filing system. Organizing papers by each child, function, etc, helps a lot. Having a place for important receipts, bills, event tickets will help when you need them later and keep you from scrambling to find them.
  • A place for Keys – Create a spot where you place your keys every time you arrive home and alleviate the morning key search.
  • A binder – Use this for keeping family menus, goals, health information and emergency info together. This can save you time and keep you organized.
  • A place to Write –  A great command center has a place to write things for everyone to see! Make sure to keep it updated and reference it often so that your family gets used to looking for what’s happening that week.

3. DECLUTTER

Start on the spaces most important to you, either the ones that are major pain spots or the ones that you see and use most often. Set aside time each week (in 10 minute increments) to declutter.  Fold those towels in the laundry basket, put away the clothes that have been draped over the treadmill for way too long.  The point is to start. YOU can do this!

Do you just want to park in your garage again?  Here are 7 Steps to help!

4. PARE DOWN

Spend 10 minutes, at least once a week going through one area of your home and decide what you can sell, donate or throw away.  You might check out the Kon-Mari method which helps you to decide which items bring you joy and which items no longer do.

5. CREATE CATEGORIES

Go through each room of your home and make a list of categories for ALL of your items.  Then use baskets, bins, etc to organize those items. Check out The Home Edit for inspiration on how to categorize and organize your things.

Don’t wait, get started today on these 5 ideas and you will be well on your way to creating the peaceful, organized home that you desire.

We know that choosing a shed is serious business.  It is an investment that will last a long time and you want it to be just right.  One of the most fun parts of designing your shed is picking the color.   It can be a really easy choice if you want it to match your home, but if we are looking for a little backyard flair it can be a little more tricky.

Driftwood Urethane - Top 5 Shed Colors

DIY Magnolia Wreath

Magnolia wreaths are not only popular but classic and beautiful. They are also a staple on Fixer Upper and Joanna Gaines loves them so we know they are perfect for your home decor.  But, why spend up to $95 for a magnolia wreath when you can quickly and easily make one for yourself for less than $20?

DIY Magnolia Wreath

HERE’S WHAT YOU WILL NEED TO GET STARTED:

  • 30 to 40 Magnolia Leaves (we asked around on Facebook and found several friends with trees with plenty of leaves to spare)
  • Hot Glue Gun and 1 long glue stick
  • Grapevine Wreath (we got ours at Joann’s)

First you will plug up your hot glue gun and let it get warm. Then you will apply glue to the end of one of the leaves and insert it into the wreath.

DIY Magnolia Wreath

Continue placing leaves in the same direction until you have filled your wreath to your liking.

Make a Magnolia Wreath at Home

Once you have filled your wreath with the magnolia leaves, go back through and apply more glue to any that may seem loose.

That’s it!  It’s really that simple.  Now you have a Magnolia Leaf Wreath that you can use year – round for your home, office or even your shed.

Angelo and Abigail Piccuci both grew up in large families so space wasn’t something they had a lot of.  Angelo’s family is Italian and he grew up with, at times, up to 5 people sharing one room and bathroom. Abigail was one of 11 kids so they didn’t really have any space outside of what they actually needed. Angelo had a dream to one day build a space where he could store his “toys” and have room where “friends and family could sit and relax” and “throw some parties”.  He knew a detached garage would be just the solution.

He and Abigail decided that it was time to invest in this dream and they began looking for a builder.

They found Woodtex by doing some research online.   They talked to other builders and found Woodtex to have the best reviews and pricing so they decided to move forward.

When we asked Angelo about the experience from his first meeting with Nathan at our sales center to the build completion, he had this to say:

“If I had to use one word, I would say very efficient.  The team at Woodtex was amazing. We were able to discuss with Woodtex reps what we wanted, the big picture and then we went over all the details. From the actual execution perspective, the team got out here, got materials, started work, completed work, followed up – everything from the planning, to the building to the payment, just as advertised, very smooth. I couldn’t be happier with the way that Nathan handled the deal, he felt like part of the family. The employees, contractors were very respectful of our property and really did a great job.”

Angelo and Abigail are loving their new garage!  From having bike nights to throwing an impromptu party with friends in their new space – it’s all that they dreamed.

Here at Woodtex, we love helping you build your dreams, whether it is a detached garage or shed. Helping you make room for life is why we exist.

According to organizer pros, only 25% of homeowners are able to park their car in the garage due to other things cluttering the garage! In addition, one in four report feeling embarrassed by how their garage looks, and they try to keep the door closed so no one can see the mess.

The average car costs $33,500 – one of the biggest purchases you’ll make. Sadly, many of us are forced to park our cars outdoors instead of parking them in the garage because our garages are full of clutter. Parking your car in the garage has a lot of benefits, here are a few:

  • Protects your car from sun, acid rain, and bird droppings
All of these things can cause the finish and surfaces of your car to prematurely degrade.
  • Protects against theft
Cars that are stored in garages are less susceptible to getting broken into, or stolen.
  • Stay out of the weather!
When you return home from a long day at work, it’s not fun to park outside and have to get out into the rain or snow before heading into the house.

Here are some ideas on how you can stop being embarrassed by your garage, and get your car back under roof. Some of these lessons come from personal experience – just a few weeks ago I went through this process and got my car back into the garage.

7 TIPS TO REGAINING YOUR GARAGE:

1) SKETCH A PLAN.

Even a quick sketch on the back of a napkin can help. What are the things you absolutely would want to store in the garage in a best case scenario? Would you like the car on the left, or the right? Is the lawn mower going in front of the car, or beside it? List your non-negotiable items that you know have to end up in the garage. For example, I recently did this exercise, and one item I had to make sure I had room for was the backup emergency generator. That’s a heavy item that has to have floor space, and has to be close to a door or window for ventilation if I need to start it up.

List items that you think you can store on the walls or ceilings, and estimate the amount of hardware / hangers you’ll need. Go to the hardware store and buy the shelves, hooks, and hardware you think you’ll need. Another great item to pick up at the hardware store is some stackable bins with lids on them. If you get clear containers, it’s much easier to find what you’re looking for after you’ve organized the garage.

2) GET EVERYTHING OUT OF THE GARAGE.

This requires a full day, so set aside a day that you know you can dedicate to this project. You may want to invite some friends or family over to help you with this. When I did this, I didn’t invite anyone over for a few reasons – one, I was embarrassed by how bad the mess was, and two, I find it distracting to have other folks around. For me to get into my organizational state of mind I need to spend a little time in the space without any distractions.

The goal is simply to get the garage EMPTY.

In the four different garages that I’ve organized this step has been the most freeing and inspiring. Taking everything OUT of the garage is the best way to start a garage organization project. You can actually SEE everything that you own, for one. Another benefit is it that it sets you up for success in Step 3!

3) SORT ALL YOUR STUFF INTO FOUR PILES:

  • Keep
  • Donate – Goodwill, local church
  • Sell – Facebook Marketplace, OfferUp, Craigslist, etc.
  • Toss – 1-800-GOT-JUNK or contact your local municipality

I’ll caution you that this step is exhausting and a bit draining. It’s easy to get decision fatigue at this step. You’re making hundreds of decisions in a short amount of time. Even though I didn’t invite anyone into this process when I did it, my advice is that you may want to have an objective third party join you to help you make some of these decisions.

  • The little red wagon that the kids used when they were young? Donate.
  • The 80 year old handheld wood plane that your great grandfather handed down to you? That’s a tough call – probably keep.
  • The pool floaty with a hole in it from two seasons ago? Toss.
  • The super duper bread maker you got for Christmas five years ago and never used? Maybe you can sell it.

Lay down tarps or blankets on the ground and physically put these piles of stuff on each tarp, to keep the piles from spilling into each other and help visually separate the piles.

4) KEEP THINGS OFF THE FLOOR.

Before moving things back into the garage, install hooks, hangars, shelves and hardware to keep things OFF the floor. Your floor space is precious, and you should aggressively defend it. Even if you pare down your stuff, if you put it all back on the floor of the garage you still won’t have room to park. Here are some things you should consider getting up off the floor:

  • Bikes
If you use your bikes a lot, you may want to invest in a wall mounted rack that is easy to use, but find a way to get your bikes up off the floor.
  • Kayaks / Canoes / Paddleboards
These can take up a ton of space in the garage, but if you get them up off the floor it makes a huge difference. You can buy a ceiling mounted boat rack, or you can craft your own with some ratchet straps and hooks.
  • Yard Tools
It’s worth getting a wall mounted hook system to get your shovels and rakes up off the floor. This also keeps them easy to find when you head out to do a little work in the garden.
  • Toolboxes and Storage Crates
Put these items on shelves along a wall so that you can easily find what your looking for while minimizing the floor space used.

When you are considering what should get stored up on the wall or ceiling, think through how often you need to access it. If you use your fishing rod three times a week, you obviously won’t want to store it in a place where you’ll need a ladder or a step stool to reach it. Things that are rarely used can be hung up in more difficult to reach places.

Pro Tip:

A few weeks ago I learned of a wheelbarrow mounting kit! A wheelbarrow is the perfect example of something that takes up a lot of floor space but doesn’t get used very much. Since we only use our wheelbarrow a few times a year, I mounted it up on the wall with the mounting kit. Now it’s up and out of the way, but I can still get to it when needed.

5) USE A PEGBOARD.

The lowly pegboard is still one of the best ways to organize small items in your garage. It’s cheap, and keeps your small hand tools at hand. It takes up no floor space, and allows you to customize the hook spacing to fit your needs. Hang up things like extension cords, etc. as well. Along with a pegboard, consider a wall mounted small parts organizer. These have a bunch of small drawers for things like screws, washers, etc. Clear plastic drawers let you see what’s inside.

6) LABEL EVERYTHING.

One thing that contributes to clutter is not knowing where things are kept. I’ve found myself buying things that I already owned, simply because I didn’t know where to find it. Get a label maker and put labels on your storage bins and shelves so you can keep track of where everything is. This will save you money and hassle over time, since you won’t have to make a trip to the store to buy something that you already have, but can’t find. It will also make you more productive in the future. When you tackle your to-do list you’ll be able to finish more quickly because you won’t waste time looking for your tools and supplies.

7) CONSIDER A SEPARATE STORAGE SHED.

You may find that despite your best efforts, your ‘KEEP’ pile is still pretty big. If so, consider a separate backyard shed in your yard. You can apply the same organizational tips to your storage shed so that you can optimize that as well. A shed can usually be fitted with an overhead garage door, or with a standard utility door to best suit your needs. A ramp at the entrance makes it easy to store things like a motorcycle, zero-turn lawn mower, or ATV.

A storage shed with a garage door can act as a standalone garage, or it can be an overflow for your existing garage. You may choose to put things like bikes, kayaks, and generator in the shed, which makes it a lot easier to make room for your car in the garage.

OTHER BENEFITS

There are a lot of benefits to having your garage organized. I already mentioned protecting your car from the elements, but here are a few other things you’ll enjoy after organizing your garage:

1) WATCHING A THUNDERSTORM

Open the garage door and sit in a lawn chair looking out at the rain. This is a simple pleasure that takes me back to childhood, watching storms with my dad.

2) ENTERTAIN FRIENDS / KIDS / NEIGHBORS

A neat and clean garage is perfect to use as an extension of your house when you’re entertaining. Set up some folding tables, throw down a table cloth, and you can host a party. Throw open the big garage door, and you’ll have plenty of ventilation and it won’t feel cramped.

3) PLACE FOR THE KIDS TO PLAY WHEN THE WEATHER IS BAD

When it’s raining outside, it’s nice to be able to have a place where the kids can hang out. I used to have a remote controlled race car that I’d run around in the garage and entertain myself for hours. Mom wasn’t too keen on me running it in the house, as I recall, but the garage was the right place for it.
