Have you tried all the storage hacks on Pinterest but you still don’t have enough space?

It may be time to purchase a storage shed.

Maybe you have organized your closets, cabinets, living room, spare room, laundry room, and playroom but you still don’t have the space you need. Let’s be honest, with sports equipment, Christmas decorations, out of season clothing, side businesses, it can be difficult to find enough storage space inside your home. It might be time to purchase a storage shed to create the additional space you need.

Here are 3 questions to assess whether you need a storage shed:

1. Have you already tried decluttering and organizing? Many times when people complain about the lack of space, experts recommend decluttering your home.  Sometimes that just isn’t enough.

2. Do you have a dedicated storage room or space in your home? Many homes lack large closets and space for storing important items. You may have lost a room to boxes and even if it is just a guest room, you shouldn’t have to sacrifice your living space for storage.  You can easily move the items to a storage shed and get your room back.

3. Do you need to store large bulky items like furniture, exercise equipment or lawn care items? These items tend to get in the way because of a lack of place to store large items. These large items don’t need to be taking up space in your home, a storage shed makes them easily accessible and keeps them out of your way.

If you answered “yes” to most or all of the questions, let’s learn how a backyard storage shed can make your life so much easier.

Beyond Storage Hacks and Organization Tips

While hacks and organization ideas can help keep your home organized, sometimes having a shed is simply a better approach to storing your things. Here are 4 reasons having a shed can help you make room for the important things in life:

1. A storage shed keeps your home clutter-free. No need to fill up a spare room and cram your closets to the brim when you can keep everything in a backyard shed.

2. A backyard shed keeps everything in one place. With a shed, you can storage all of your important items right in your backyard.  No need to search all over the house or drive across town to a storage unit.

3. A storage shed gives you more space. If it won’t fit in your house, it can fit in a shed. Whether you need to store hobby supplies, sports equipment or even an need a space for an office – a shed is a perfect solution.

4. A shed can protect your investments. If you need to store a classic car, your truck, a motorcycle or any other investment to protect it from the elements, a storage shed is the way to go.

We would love to help you find just the right shed to fit your needs!

Fall is in full swing and before we know it winter will be here with it’s freezing temps and blistery weather.   Before all of the holiday parties, family traditions and hustle and bustle, tackle these home maintenance tasks to prepare your home for winter weather.

HERE ARE 7 TIPS TO PREPARE YOUR HOME FOR WINTER WEATHER:

1. Reverse your Ceiling Fans – Run blades in a clockwise direction to create an updraft to push warm air downwards.

2. Check the Roof – look for damaged, loose or missing shingles that may cause leakage during winter storms. Replace any that are in bad shape.

3. Caulk around Windows and Doors – If gaps between door frames or windows are larger than the width of a nickel, it is time to fill in with caulk.

4. Clean the Gutters – Clogged gutters can lead to damaged roofing, siding and wood trim.

5. Turn off Exterior Faucets – Water left in pipes can freeze which will cause pipes to burst as the water expands. Disconnect all hoses and drain all water in faucets.

6. Protect Your Pipes – To help protect your pipes from freezing, insulate them with a blanket of foam insulation.

7. Protect Your Stuff  – Put your lawn care tools, mower, and summer recreation items in a garage or Shed.  Don’t leave these expensive items out in the elements, protect them with a Woodtex Shed or Garage.

Don’t wait until winter weather hits and you are stuck with costly repairs that could have been avoided with a little winter prep.

Is it just us or is it so fun to create your own home decor that can be repurposed for every season? We love this simple DIY crate planter that you can change to reflect any message/season that works for you.

Also, it never hurts to have a cute way to show off your favorite plants, right? (And it looks beautiful on the front porch of one of our sheds (if we do say so ourselves)

DIY Crate Planter

Here’s what you will need to get started:

  • Wooden crate
  • Small chalkboard
  • School glue or hot glue gun (whichever you prefer)
  • Black ink or Vintage effect wash (both shown here)
  • Paint brush
  • Sponge brush
  • Sponge
  • Chalk or Chalk pen
  • Chalk paint in your desired color (we chose white)

First we mixed about 5 drops of black ink into 1 cup of water.

DIY Crate Planter

Then we used the sponge brush to lightly distress the chalkboard. Once you distress to your liking, set it aside to dry.

DIY Crate Planter

Then you will paint the entire crate with the chalk paint you have selected.

DIY Crate Planter

While this is drying you can write on your chalkboard. (We went with a simple “Welcome”)

DIY Crate Planter

Once your crate planter has dried you can use the sponge brush to apply the ink to the box.  We painted one slat at a time and then wiped it immediately with the sponge to create a distressed look.

Once you have distressed the entire crate, set aside to dry.  Once dry you can add glue to the back of your chalkboard and affix to the crate planter.

Let dry then add plants of your choosing!

Now you have an adorable crate planter than you can change out for every season!

Woodtex Sheds are built tough. We stand by the quality of our products which is why we use LP® Siding & Trim on our Backyard Sheds and Garages.  In fact, we wouldn’t recommend purchasing a wooden Shed or Garage without it!

WHY?

  • It’s Durable.
  • It’s Beautiful
  • It Has a 50 Year Warranty

Let’s break that down:

LP® Siding is Durable. LP SmartSide Trim and Siding have been subjected to the intense moisture and thriving termite colonies of Hilo, Hawaii, since 1996. Even after years of exposure, LP® SmartSide products remain structurally sound.

  • Proven to Resist Heat and Sun Exposure Thanks to industrial-grade binders and resins and a durable coating, LP® SmartSide has been shown to remain strong and beautiful even after prolonged exposure to intense sunlight and hot, dry weather.
  • Proven to Resist Impacts Because of their unique engineering, LP® SmartSide Trim and Siding products offer incredible strength to resist impact damage.
  • Proven to Resist Rot and Fungal Decay Tests show that LP® SmartSide siding resists fungal decay and remains structurally sound even after years of exposure in Hilo, Hawaii — a jungle with extremely high humidity and an average of 170 inches of rainfall per year.
  • Proven to Resist Termites LP® SmartSide Trim and Siding are treated with SmartGuard® featuring zinc borate to resist termite damage, even in the jungle of Hilo, Hawaii, which has a high population of especially aggressive termites.
  • Proven to Withstand Freeze/Thaw Cycles Many substrates can crack when water is absorbed, freezes and then expands. LP® SmartSide Trim and Siding are made with special waxes to minimize water infiltration and cracking.

Wooden Shed

Every LP® SmartSide product is treated to the core with an advanced formula of binders, waxes and zinc borate before being bonded with a water-resistant, resin-saturated overlay. This process helps keep out moisture for long-term durability and strength against harsh weather.

LP Smart Siding

LP® Siding is Beautiful. With its deep cedar grain texture and defining shadow lines, LP® SmartSide siding gives you the undeniable look of real wood, unlike fiber cement and vinyl siding.

LP® Siding has a 50 Year Warranty. With an industry leading warranty, you can be sure that you are purchasing a product that will last!

We believe in building products we are proud to put our name on – which is why we use LP® Siding!  We don’t want you to purchase a shed or garage that breaks down quickly and just won’t last. Don’t buy a Shed unless it has LP® Siding!

AT WOODTEX YOU GET HANDCRAFTED QUALITY YOU CAN TRUST A LIFETIME.

Inexpensive DIY Shed Organization

At Woodtex we love to hear about how our customers ‘Make Room for Life’ with their Woodtex sheds. One of the ways they do that is by creating more space in their home and garage by organizing things in a storage shed.

Here are some inexpensive ways to organize your storage shed to create more room for the important things in life, without spending a lot of hard earned cash.

Between the Studs Shelving

There’s a lot of space between the studs of a shed or garage that can be turned into shelving space with very little cost or effort.

(Credit: todayshomeowner.com)

This project is so easy you’ll wonder why you haven’t done it before – it helps free up so much room by getting the smaller items off of your workbench and other work surfaces.

  1. Cut a 1×4 board to length so it fits snugly between the studs.
  2. Screw or nail the shelf boards horizontally in place between the studs.
  3. Attach a piece of lath or lattice to the studs in front of the shelf to secure items.

Peg Boards

If you are looking for an easy and inexpensive way to get things organized in your backyard shed, look no further than pegboard. The only supplies you will need for this DIY project is a board and some hooks to hang your supplies. Whether your shed is a craft studio, a workshop, or a place for the kids toys, a peg boards’ functionality will cater to any of these needs. Hang rope, bicycle helmets, baskets, shelving, or tools from a pegboard to keep items organized and visible. Pegboards could also be painted if you’re looking to spruce up your shed. Whatever you plan to use your shed for, a peg board is an easy DIY project for any size space.

DIY Shed Organization

PVC Pipes

Using PVC pipes for organization is inexpensive and the possibilities are endless.

Long handled tools such as rakes, brooms and shovels can be difficult to keep organized. Instead of sticking your tools in a corner, secure these items with PVC wall storage slots. After securing boards to your shed wall, cut a 1 ½ pvc pipe into sections. Proceed to attach the PVC pipe holders onto the wall and slide in your long handled tools. This quick project will transform your shed while keeping your larger tools safe and secure.

Another great use of PVC pipes is creating holders for small tools and writing utensils. With a peg board and some leftover PVC pipes, you can keep your pencils, zip ties and small screwdrivers all in one place. Simply attach a few hooks onto your workshops’ peg board and slide the pipes onto the hooks. This option is handy for keeping track of your smaller items that don’t have a home.

Magnetic Strips

Never lose a drill bit again. Just like with kitchen knives, you can attach small drill bits and other metal objects to a magnetic strip. Magnetic strips are inexpensive and easy to install on a workbench or a wall. This DIY idea will prevent you from wasting time searching for the right sized drill bit during a project.

Pallet Wood Shelving

Pallet wood projects have become increasingly popular because they are inexpensive and create a rustic look people love. Pallets can often be found for free or purchased for just a few dollars. To create a hanging storage shelf out of pallet wood you will need the following:

  • Pallet
  • Tape Measure
  • Circular Saw
  • Drill and Screws
  • Level
  • Paint or Stain (optional)

By pulling up the boards on the front of the pallet and relocating them, you can create your own custom shelf to fit your storage needs. This pallet shelf can be painted to make a beautiful shed decor or left unfinished for a more rustic look. Whatever style you choose to create, you will love having this unique shelving option to hold cleaning supplies, tool boxes, paints and other miscellaneous items.

Five Gallon Bucket Garden Hose Holder

Attach an old bucket to the wall or the outside of your shed to keep your garden hose tangle-free and organized. Why buy an expensive hose reel when you can create a crafty alternative for an affordable price? This DIY storage option also works well with extension cords, ropes and other items that easily tangle. Simply wrap the hose or rope around the hanging bucket, and enjoy a fully functioning hose holder in minutes.

In case you are wondering if you might need a shed, here are 12 Reasons You May Need To Buy A Shed:

1. STORAGE, STORAGE, AND MORE STORAGE

Of course an obvious answer, everyone could use more storage. Get the Christmas decorations and excessive amounts of toys out of your garage, and into a storage shed. Take control over your closets again and actually make room for your clothes, winter coats, shoes, and accessories.

Ever get tired of looking at those boxes in your basement? Open up more room in your basement by moving those boxes out of your home and into a backyard shed. Think of all the extra room you will have in your house – not to mention how organized everything will look.

If your home does not have a garage, the need for a storage shed is that much more vital. Keep your excess decorations, furniture, gardening tools, and lawn equipment tucked away and out of reach from children and pets. A lockable shed can also serve as a way of childproofing your home. Any additional space is good space.

2. ROOM FOR HOBBIES AND WORK SPACE

Owning a storage shed will make room for all of your hobbies, old and new. By purchasing a storage shed, you can finally pick up that hobby you have been wanting to try for years.

Turn your workshop dreams into a reality with extra space to create and design. Not only will this shed give you the freedom to build, it will provide you with a space to unwind and enjoy life. With this extra workspace, you can finally work on that new piece of furniture your wife has been wanting. The more creative your surroundings, the more creative you will be.

Do you work from home or need an office space that is quiet and serene? Customize a perfect workspace away from the distractions of your home. A separate office will help you to work more efficiently while still enjoying the convenience of an at-home job.

Hobby Shed

3. CLEANLINESS

You can’t beat having an organized garage and a mess-free backyard. Hide away the lawn equipment, bikes, and gardening supplies in a stunning wooden shed. A Woodtex shed will bring more enjoyment to your backyard and lead to less junk in the garage.

Less clutter means more space and more space means easier cleaning. Buying a shed will help you to clean out those messy areas in your house and compile it all into one organized space. Cleaning won’t seem so dreadful when everything is neatly organized and has its own place! Not to mention, less clutter leaves fewer places for dirt and dust to hide. Without the lawn and gardening equipment being drug through the garage and basement; your house, garage, and driveway will stay dirt-free. Spend less time cleaning and more time relaxing.

4. VALUE

Having an outdoor storage space will automatically add value to your home. Anyone looking to buy your home will love the added bonus and convenience of a Woodtex storage space. Clean up your life while adding value to your home.

Extra storage will never be a downside of someone interested in buying your home; in fact, it will make your house more desirable and more competitive in the seller’s market. A Woodtex shed will complement your home and increase your chances of making a sale. Not only will a storage shed bring you short-term benefits and enjoyment, it will add value to your home in the long run.

If your home doesn’t have a garage, extra storage space will be crucial for homebuyers. Many people buying homes are looking to start a family or have young children. Additional space will be at the top of their checklist. For sellers who are looking to sell quickly a nice shed in the backyard can pull the yard together nicely. Give your backyard the upgrade that homebuyers won’t be able to resist.

Shed Door Lock

 5. SAFETY

Instead of having all of the kid’s activities and sports equipment sprawled across the yard, keep them in one safe space. This will make your home less attractive to thieves and give you  peace of mind. Purchasing a storage shed to keep your expensive items locked away from potential robbers is never a bad investment.

Furthermore, it is important to keep children out of harm’s way if you are storing power tools, lawn equipment, and harmful chemicals. A storage shed will give you the ability to lock up all of your sharp and dangerous tools in one central location. Let your kids and pets explore without having to worry about what they might get into. Nothing says sanity like safer children.

6. EASY ACCESS AND ORGANIZATION

Save time searching through your messy garage just to find one thing. By having a centralized space to keep all the essentials, you will no longer have to interrupt your project in order to find the missing piece. Easily add shelving, cubbies, or peg boards to the interior of your shed to keep things extra tidy and accessible. Keep everyday essentials close by and other items stored for easy access. The certainty of knowing where everything is will save you time, frustration, and energy

Tool shed

7. PROTECTION FROM WEATHER

Winter weather can be harsh on your garden and equipment. Bring your more vulnerable and fragile plants indoors during the winter months to keep them thriving. Choosing a shed with windows can double as a greenhouse to keep your plants and produce growing year round.

Don’t let your expensive equipment be ruined by moisture exposure and rust. Keep your belongings in prime working condition by storing them in a safe and clean environment. Your shed is guaranteed to withstand everything from blazing summer days to harsh winter nights.

8. FAMILY FUN

A shed doesn’t always have to be for storage. Get the kids out of the house and into the backyard for family fun. A backyard shed can be a great space for you and your kids to share hobbies such as gardening or woodworking.

Whether you like it or not, your kids will turn your new shed into their personal playhouse. This is a great way to get the kids out of the house where they can be as loud and messy as they please. Designate an area of the shed for them to be creative while the other side can be for building, gardening, or lawn equipment. This is another great way to keep your house a mess-free zone. Spend more time outside with your family learning, creating, and making memories in your backyard storage structure.

Garden Shed

9. PROTECTION FROM BUGS AND OUTDOOR ANIMALS

No one wants their equipment taken over by ants, spider webs, and termites. Having to clean your equipment before being able to use it prolongs your project even further. Woodtex sheds are designed to keep out the unwanted insects and bugs, keeping your items pristine and ready for use.

Having lawn equipment exposed in your backyard could be a potential harm for your beloved pets wandering around in your house. Keep sharp objects and expensive equipment out of reach from your animals. No one likes a half-chewed rake.

10. KEEP LESS ATTRACTIVE ITEMS OUT OF VIEW

Having a spotless garage and outstanding backyard is easier than you think. Simply stow away less attractive items in a beautifully crafted Woodtex storage structure. Hide the bulky items taking away from the beauty of your home in a shed crafted to fit your style and budget.

Junk in shed

11. ENTERTAINING

Looking for a perfect place for outdoor entertaining? Look no further. Woodtex sheds are the ultimate backyard hangout spot. With the versatility of our storage sheds, you can style your party as rustic or as elegant as you prefer. Transform your shed into an outdoor eating and bar space, or convert it into a fun spot for the kid’s birthday parties. Our front porches make a great spot for entertaining while still enjoying the outdoors. Other uses for sheds might include:

  • Arts and Crafts Studio

12. SPORTS/OUTDOOR ACTIVITY EQUIPMENT:

Do you have kayaks, soccer balls, hockey sticks or bikes laying around your garage and backyard? Keep these expensive items locked up and protected in a storage shed. A gambrel roof package would be a great choice for storing large kayaks, canoes or john boats from the roof of your shed.

If you love sports of any kind, a spacious storage shed is exactly what you need. Keep your expensive equipment dry and locked up for safekeeping and convenient access.  You won’t even have to wipe the dirt and bugs off of your kayak before going on your next adventure. Woodtex’s large barn doors or garage door options are a perfect fit for boats, bikes, and sporting equipment.

One of the biggest struggles of buying a shed is making decisions, which is why we developed this storage shed planning guide. Size, style, color, siding materials, roofing materials, etc… the list goes on! The most important decision–and the one that you should make first and foremost–is what size storage shed you should buy. The size you choose should be determined by what you need to put in it. That seems like a no-brainer! But it can be tricky to visualize all your “stuff” and how it will fit into the different size options that Woodtex offers.

We created this Storage Shed Planning Guide that you can download and print as many times as you need while you brainstorm what size storage shed to choose. Here are a couple of ideas for how to use the guide:

  • Cut out the Gear Examples and arrange them
  • Use the Layout Examples to help guide you
  • Measure your gear with a measuring tape.
  • Use a pencil to draw your own gear and design your ideal layout
  • Save your sketches and bring them with you when you talk to a Sales Advisor or take a photo with your phone that you can email to your Sales Advisor

If your shed needs a fresh coat of paint, you can paint it yourself without having to go out and purchase a new one.
We know a shed’s paint color is a major factor is buying or building a storage shed. Whether you prefer your shed matches the color of your house, coordinates with other out buildings, or meet the requirements of your Home Owner’s Association, choosing shed colors can sometimes be a challenge. But for Silke Ernisse, she saw an opportunity.
Silke (pronounced “silka”) picked out a 10×14 Lincoln Lofted Shed from our inventory at our Buffalo Sales Center a few years ago, and it was nearly perfect. Quality of construction, perfect size, great style… everything was right except the color. She really wanted a red storage shed, and this beige one was alright, but not perfect. It just didn’t fit with her house and the surrounding. Instead of ordering a new shed to be built, Silke decided to buy it anyway, and planned from the beginning to simply repaint it once it was delivered. Problem solved!
Silke graciously shared her experience with painting her Woodtex shed, and we’d like to pass on her wisdom to our readers.

Preparation

Silke painted her shed just a day or two after delivery, so the shed’s siding was clean and dry. If this is not the case with your shed, wash your siding thoroughly and let it dry completely before starting your shed paint project.
This particular shed did not need to be primed first, because of the light color. Since it was going to be painted a dark red, it just wasn’t necessary. On the flip side, if you would like to repaint a dark-colored shed in a lighter tone, it may be sensible to prime it first.
The white trim was not going to be painted, so Silke taped all of the trim on the shed. She used regular blue painters tape–the kind you can find in the paint department of your local hardware store. There may be tricky areas to tape over, like the X-pattern on the doors, but just do your best.
Silke’s advice with the painters tape is to make sure it is pressed down properly, and pull the tape off before the paint dries. If you wait too long, you may pull some dried paint off along with the tape. If this happens, just touch up as needed.

Painting the Shed

Silke’s new shed paint was Behr Premium Plus Ultra in a Semi-Gloss sheen. Although no primer was needed on this shed, this paint does have primer in it. The color Silke chose is a deep red called “Sly Fox”.
Having never painted a rough, grooved exterior like shed siding before, Silke tried a variety of brushes including high-density rollers, paint pads, bristled brushes, and foam brushes. The paint pads worked best on the siding, and the bristled brushes worked best in tight areas around trim (especially on the doors). The foam brushes were “pretty much useless” because the rough finish of the siding caused them to break apart. The roller worked alright, but was more cumbersome than the pads, and had a tendency to cause splatter. Trying various brushes in different places will give you an opportunity to see what works best for your siding.
For this 10×14 Lincoln Lofted Barn, Silke used two gallons of paint. A second coat was added to areas that needed it, due to the texture of the wood siding. Most of the areas needing touch ups were the grooves and some of the harder to reach areas.
Silke’s advice is to paint one good coat first, let it dry thoroughly (preferably overnight), then check to see if touch ups or a second coat is necessary. Look at the shed from all angles and at different times of the day so you see if in different lighting conditions.
In the end, Silke was very happy with her project! It looks great and wasn’t too difficult. Have you done a project like this with your Woodtex Shed? We want to hear about it!
